So I’ve discovered it’ll be about 4500 total to get my Z3 Coupe back in solid shape. It needs a whole new trunk floor because the welds poppi allowed it to crack almost all the way through and it also needs almost every bushing for the rear and front as well as new diff mounts and some other stuff. I’m having a hard time deciding whether to let go or not. On the one hand I don’t really know what I could get for it in the state of disrepair. On the other I really do love this car and want to keep it going, it’s just hard financially right now and my other car has some small issues as well. If anyone has any advice I’ll gladly listen. Here’s some pics for your time

Guessing they’ll go up in value eventually - can you afford to hang on to it and do the repairs over time? Guessing it would fetch good money if put into very good shape.

If you have the room, keep it and store it until you can afford to fix it. The Z3 coupes are going up in value, but that is only true so far for the M version, although given enough time the non-M version would go up as well. Prioritize your other cars for repair first and come back to this later.

Also if you decide to let it go, I think you might want to part it out instead of selling it as a whole. I think you would get more money this way.

Perfect is the enemy of the good. Search for a fix of the 20% that really matters and then drive it. If the trunk is cracked, seal it with silicone.

If you decide to sell, I’ll be first in line to buy it. Seriously. I’m not far from you :)

But realistically, it’s worth fixing. If you can keep it in a garage while it’s not running, you’re not doing any harm to yourself or the car (unless you’re paying a loan) and can save up the $$ to repair it correctly. Even if it takes five or ten  years, who cares, it will be worth it. I’m seeing even non-M Z3 coupes going for insane prices right now, it’s only going to go up.

But seriously, you wanna sell, call me

I completely agree! If it can be stored safely and kept running for a few years, it will be worth it to keep and repair when you're ready to do so.

If you have a place to keep it, and it's not costing you anything keep it. It's not like these are going to go down in value. You can always change your mind later and unload it.

Just fix it your self.

Buy a harbor freight welder, practice on scraps of metal, then get going to town.

Store it til you fix it.

The trunk floor crack is more accurately basically the diff mount/subframe. It’s not something that can really be sealed with silicone. Most of the stuff involved in the 4500 is definitely necessary. I probably will end up keeping it, I really do love the car

I’ll keep you in mind if I do decide to sell it. If I do have to get rid of it, it would be nice to go to a good owner like I assume you are. I’m hoping to convince my dad to loan me a little bit of the money for now, he just doesn’t think it’s smart to repair it considering the value like I do

I don’t have anywhere great to store it unfortunately

As a cheap racer, I would g et a weld shop or body shop guy to repair the structural stuff. As for the bushings, I would pull them and fill them using Loctite S2o Urathane and I bet you couldn’t tell them from new. For bushings that are  hard to pull, fill them in place.

Here’s a video on how to do it.

From what they told me (it’s ar Bavarian specialties, a fairly well known bmw repair and race shop) the floor is cracked all the way through and is beyond the point of welding

Just make an agreement that, should the person you sell it to decide to sell it (other than to a family member) you have the right to buy it back at fair market value. There, I’ve done my lawyering for the day!

well...... One plan of action to consider is taking it to a good fabricator and having them add whatever steel is needed to tie everything back together just so you can drive it. I bet they can do that for less than $1k., Probably less than $500.

If at some point you want to restore it, you are ripping the floor out anyway.

Again, the perfect is the enemy of the good. If a fabricator can tie everything back together for a fraction of the price, you never know, it may be all you can ever justify. Care to post a picture or two on what failed and needs repair?

Non-Ms in decent (not excellent)  condition are going for $12-15k. It’s hard to not see the value in that.

Keep it man, by the time youre done with it, the value of these things will have doubled. Not only that, but imagine the smile on your face when you finally get in the car and go out for a long drive. It will be worth it, I assure you...
